International Co-operative Day Celebrations

The 2017 International Day of Co-operatives takes place on Saturday 1 July and co-operatives around the world, including our Credit Union, will be celebrating.

This will be the 95th International Co-operative Day and the 23rd United Nations International Day of Co-operatives, and the theme is ‘Co-operatives ensure no one is left behind’, which recognises the key role co-operatives play in supporting inclusion and diversity.

Through the 2017 International Day, the co-operative movement will show how its unique business model, based on democracy and openness, creates opportunities for those most at risk of being left behind, whether that’s young people, the elderly, women, people with disabilities or the poor.

Martin Groombridge, Chief Executive of the Credit Union, said: “As a co-operative, our Credit Union is owned and run by and for its members. We follow the principles and the values of the co-op movement, such as democracy, equality and solidarity, and we believe in honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. That’s why we think it is important to celebrate International Co-operative Day and all the good work that co-operatives do around the world.”

There are over 2.6 million co-operatives in the world with about 1 billion members. Co-operatives contribute to sustainable economic growth and stable, quality employment, employing 250 million people worldwide.

The global co-operative movement is represented by the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and this year, on the International Day of Co-operatives, the ICA is calling on co-operatives across the world to reflect on the challenges caused by rising inequality, to recommit to ensuring equality across their communities, and to celebrate the co-operative contribution to making the world a better place.
