Credit Union alternative to credit cards

Credit card borrowing is rising at its fastest annual rate in nearly two decades, as growing numbers of households get into debt. To avoid creating your own debt crisis, why not ditch your credit card and use our Credit Union alternative instead?

The Credit Union’s Engage Visa contactless debit card offers a real alternative, whether in stores and restaurants or online, which protects you from racking up unaffordable debt. Unlike a credit card, our Engage card doesn’t let you go over your limit and has a fixed and open charging structure.

Engage is the national brand for all credit union banking and payment services and the Engage Visa contactless debit card and account is a useful benefit for credit union members. There are no hidden charges and fantastic rewards mean that you can save money on your everyday shopping.

You can use the Engage Visa contactless debit card in much the same way as a credit card, to purchase goods or services online, or in stores or restaurants – in fact, anywhere that displays the Visa symbol. You can get cashback in shops or withdraw money from ATMs at home or abroad. As well as using your contactless debit card to make purchases, you can also use your smartphone to make contactless payments from your Engage account.

It is free to apply for a card (and you can have an additional card for free too), the card can be used for free for any purchases made in the UK and there is a free mobile app for Android or iPhone. It is free to set up a standing order and free email alerts help you track your spend. There are low management fees and it costs just 75p for cashpoint withdrawals in the UK.

Credit Union Chief Executive Martin Groombridge said: “Credit cards and overdrafts are very convenient, but they can be very expensive and difficult to clear. The Credit Union’s Engage Visa contactless debit card is a great way to pay for products and services, without the risk of building up large debts.

“You can use your Engage card online to shop and pay bills, as well as saving money with cashback rewards every time you use your card at one of the many participating retailers.”
