Ownership matters at the Credit Union

As a co-operative, the Credit Union takes a longer and broader view of its reason for existence.

Some forms of business ownership focus on short term profit rather than the longer term interests of consumers, employees, the environment and the wider community. However, at the Credit Union, things are different.

Our customers are the owners, living in our communities and caring for our shared environment. It is our co-operative ownership that shapes the way we operate our business more fairly than others. Ownership really does matter.

As a co-operative, we put the needs and aspirations of our members first, ahead of maximising profits for shareholders. Through our concern for people and the world we live in, co-operatives help to deliver sustainable growth and environmental responsibility.

Credit Union Chief Executive Martin Groombridge said: “Our Credit Union is proud to be a co-operative, putting the interest of our members first, instead of profits for fat cat city shareholders. We are committed to serving our community and making sure that environmental issues are at the forefront of the work we do.”

According to the latest figures, in the UK there are over 7,000 co-operatives, employing 233,000 people and generating an annual turnover of nearly £38 billion. There are 13.7 million co-op members.
